SURVEY REPORT:
The Future of Public Hearings in British Columbia

surveyreport.png

In April 2022, the Renovate the Public Hearing Initiative hosted a province-wide workshop on the future of public hearings in British Columbia. The workshop convened elected officials, local government staff, community organizations and policy/industry experts to reflect on the rationale for public hearings and the challenges and opportunities created by public hearing requirements, to envision alternative approaches to public input, and to discuss the criteria that could be used to evaluate those alternatives.

The Renovate the Public Hearing Survey followed this workshop, and was advertised and available to British Columbians for five weeks. The survey asked for participants' opinions on aspects of public input for local government land-use decisions, such as: benefits and challenges of the current system, possible alternative approaches, and general advice for the future of public hearings. The Survey Report summarizes the process and participants, and breaks down the key findings of this survey.
